A Proof-of-Concept Low-Cost SeaGlider with Syringe-Driven Buoyancy Controland 3D-Printed Structure
บทคัดย่อ
The high cost of commercial autonomous underwater gliders creates a significant barrier for
research and educational applications. This project introduces and validates a low-cost, proof-of-
concept SeaGlider that utilizes a novel syringe-driven buoyancy control engine. The vehicle platform,
with a 100 mm diameter and 1 m length, adjusts its buoyancy via a single-syringe system capable of
displacing up to 300 mL. The syringe is actuated by a stepper motor with a 13:1 gear reduction, under
the control of an Arduino microcontroller. The glider’s hull was constructed from a readily available
acrylic pipe, with the internal chassis and component mounts fabricated using 3D printing, which
significantly reduced manufacturing costs and complexity. Experimental results from tests conducted
in a controlled pool environment demonstrate that with precise ballasting and optimal wing
positioning, the platform successfully achieves stable, sawtooth-pattern gliding motion. This work
confirms the viability of a syringe-based system as a simple yet effective method for buoyancy control,
presenting a scalable and cost-effective framework for the future development of accessible
underwater glider prototypes for educational and preliminary research purposes.
